Gabrielle Union received the Fierce and Fearless Award at the 6th Annual Black Women in Hollywood pre-Oscars luncheon .
In the speech, Gabrielle is honest about her struggles and the work it took to get to a place where she wanted in her life. We’ve all heard how the first step in moving forward is being able to acknowledge what you want to change and that you can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. But the aspect that Gabrielle talks about that I love is that she says that she did the work to become the person she’s always dreamed of being.
One modern therapeutic intervention that people are using more and more is Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) therapy. In the ACT framework, these ideas Gabrielle talks about would be known as values-based action – doing something because it is based on your values. Once we acknowledge and accept what it is that we need to work on, then we need to take action that is guided by our strongest part of ourselves or our values – the part of us that is fierce and fearless (pun intended).
